Crash Leads To Impaired Driving Charges

A crash in the town of Chautauqua on Wednesday led to impaired driving and drug possession charges against a Westfield man, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies charged 54-year-old Kevin J. Kelley after responding to a single-vehicle crash near 6398 Route 394 around 3:40 p.m. An investigation determined Kelley was allegedly operating his vehicle northbound on Route 394 when he left the road and came to rest in a field.

A witness told deputies Kelley had been driving erratically prior to the crash. Kelley was later found to have been driving under the influence of drugs and was taken into custody. He was also allegedly found in possession of a controlled narcotic without a prescription.

Kelley, who was not injured in the crash, was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while ability impaired by drugs as well as moving from lane unsafely and speed not reasonable and prudent.

The Westfield man was taken to the Sheriff’s Office in Mayville for further processing and released to appear in court in January to answer the charges.
