Motorcyclist Killed After Crash In Hanover

HANOVER — A motorcyclist from Forestville died after he was struck by a car involved in a motor vehicle crash in front of him Friday in the town of Hanover.

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputies responded at about 6 p.m. for reports of a serious injury accident at the intersection of Route 39 and Hanover Road.

Deputies determined 57-year-old Dawn M. Clayburg of Tonawanda was southbound on Hanover Road when she reportedly entered the intersection at Route 39. Police said Clayburg failed to yield the right of way after stopping at a stop sign when she struck a westbound vehicle, driven by 23-year-old Brandon Hilton of Westfield.

The collision caused Hilton’s vehicle to go into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane and strike a motorcycle, operated by 61-year-old William G. Wagner.

Wagner reportedly suffered serious injuries and was taken by Starflight helicopter to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, where he was pronounced dead at about midnight, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Team and members of the Forestville Fire Department also responded Friday.

Clayburg was cited for failure to yield the right of way. The crash remains under investigation.

Friday’s crash is the second fatal accident involving a motorcyclist in the town of Hanover in less than a week. On Monday, Michael P. Shoemaker, 60, of Buffalo, died after being struck while riding his motorcycle on Route 20 next to Old Main Road.

That accident took place around 4:30 p.m. and involved motorist Tammy L. Mays, 48, of Silver Creek. Mays was charged by sheriff’s deputies for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign prior to the crash.
