FLUVANNA — A Jamestown man was flown to an Erie, Pa., hospital Friday afternoon after reportedly suffering a medical emergency while driving on Interstate 86.

According to the New York State Police, 23-year-old Brandon McElrath Hotchkiss was found unresponsive by first responders at about 4 p.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle off the westbound roadway.

“(Troopers on the scene) are saying he just veered off the road, so I would assume the medical condition is what caused the accident,” said Captain Eric J. Balon with the State Police. “There’s no other apparent contributing factors that we observed on the scene yet.”

Balon said I-86 was briefly closed for the Starflight helicopter to land. Police are currently waiting for a hospital report to determine the nature of the medical condition and whether the emergency led to the crash or vice versa.
