Voters OK Tax Funding To Lakewood, Hazeltine Libraries

Voters in the Southwestern Central School District approved the inclusion of the Lakewood Memorial Library and the Hazeltine Public Library on the district’s tax role.

The proposition, according to unofficial results, was approved Tuesday with 425 voting in favor and 413 voting against.

“People really see the value of the library in the community,” said Mary Miller, director of the Lakewood Memorial Library.

The Lakewood library will now receive $139,000 annually beginning in 2019 while the Hazeltine Public Library will receive $65,000 from the Southwestern Central School District as opposed to receiving money from their respective village and townships.

“These funds are going to make 2019 possible now,” Miller said.

Miller explained that in previous years, each library had to ask for money every year. But now officials at both libraries can plan for the future by knowing their annual budgets, she said.

Miller emphasized the importance of early childhood literacy and noted she was “so happy” the libraries will be able to continue operation.
