Sen. Young Moves Up In ‘Most Powerful People’ List

State Sen. Catharine Young, R-Olean, is among the top 20 most powerful people in state politics, according to City & State New York.

City & State is covers New York’s local and state politics and policy.

Young was ranked 52nd on the 2017 list.

“This Western New York state senator heads both the New York State Senate Republican Campaign Committee and the state Senate Finance Committee, the first woman to hold that key position,” City & State’s analysis said. “Wearing two hats as party war chest booster and state Senate purse string holder, Catharine Young is involved in scores of causes and recently sponsored the state Senate’s anti-sexual harassment measures. As election season heats up, the pressure will be on her to maintain the GOP’s last hold on statewide power.”

Lt. Gov. KathyHochul of Buffalo is ranked 77th on the list.

The rest of the top 10, in descending order:

¯ Gov. Andrew Cuomo

¯ President Donald Trump

¯ Assemblyman Carl Heastie, D-Brooklyn and Assembly speaker

¯ U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York and Senate minority leader

¯ John Flanagan, R-Suffolk County and Senate majority leader

¯ Thomas DiNapoli, state comptroller

¯ Melissa DeRosa, secretary to the governor

¯ Alphonso David, counsel to the governor

¯ Robert Mujica, state budget director

¯ Barbara Underwood, acting state attorney general.
