Reed Says He Backs President’s Import Tariff Proposal

U.S. Rep. Tom Reed is backing President Donald Trump’s plan to impose a tariff on imported steel and aluminum.

The tariffs were discussed during Tuesday’s call with reporters in which Reed expressed his agreement with the idea. The tariffs would impose a tax of 25 percent on imported steel and a 10 percent tax on aluminum.

Reed, R-Corning, said he supports the tariffs because the country can no longer keep up “the status quo” and expect change. He said he understands there is the possibility of a trade war, but said it will be beneficial to America in the long-term.

“Enough is enough when it comes to these unfair trade practices,” Reed said.

Reed said imposing the tariffs is an executive function that the president has the right to put into place. He said he supports the disruptive impact the president is having by possibly implementing the tariffs.

Reed said the idea has been “bubbling” for quite some time and there had been many consultations with representatives in Congress.

“I do not see this as shocking to anyone who is an elected official on the hill,” he said.

When asked if it is appropriate for these types of measures to be announced on Twitter, Reed said it was a “sign of the times.”

In other news, Reed discussed the involvement of a Russian-run social media account called “Blacktivist” that has ties to Western New York. Reed said he was unaware of the details of the situation.

Buffalo radio station WBEN reported last week that Buffalo Black Lives Matter activists were contacted by Blacktivist, which was named in Robert Mueller’s indictment regarding meddling in the 2016 election. The contact occurred in April 2016 about a rally for India Cummings, a person who died while in custody at a holding center in Buffalo.

However, Reed said that kind of activity is something the American people need to be aware of. “It’s incumbent on everybody to be aware that it’s out there,” he said.

Reed said he had faith in the American people to discern reality from false accounts.

“The American people are the smartest and brightest on the face of the earth,” he said.
