City Man Indicted On Attempted Murder Charge

A Jamestown man accused of severely burning a woman during a domestic incident in December has been indicted by a Chautauqua County grand jury on attempted murder and assault charges.

Luis Castro-Mojica, 37, is scheduled to appear for a conference in County Court on March 26 after the case was moved from Jamestown City Court. A grand jury indicted Castro-Mojica on charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, both felonies.

He was arraigned Jan. 22 in Mayville and remains in Chautauqua County Jail. The city man was originally arraigned on the assault charge in front of Judge John LaMancuso in Jamestown.

The new charge is the result of an ongoing investigation into the Dec. 5 domestic incident at a Thayer Street residence in Jamestown in which police said Castro-Mojica allegedly doused a woman with flammable material and set her on fire. The 27-year-old woman, who has not been identified, sustained severe burns to her head, face and torso and was taken to the Erie County Medical Center for treatment.

Chautauqua County District Attorney Patrick Swanson said this week the woman was still recovering from her injuries at the hospital. Swanson declined to comment on last month’s indictment as the investigation remains ongoing.

During an interview in December, Swanson said it was “one of the worst burning cases I’ve ever seen.”

Castro-Mojica is being represented by the Public Defender’s Office.
