MAYVILLE — With 2017 coming to a close, the Chautauqua County Legislature commended a few notable people during its final meeting of the year.

Outgoing Legislator Ron Lemon, R-Frewsburg, was recognized for his six years of service by Legislator Chuck Nazzaro, D-Jamestown. Lemon said it has been an honor to serve as a legislator, and noted that he has met many people over the years and has enjoyed working with the other legislators.

“It’s been nothing but fun and a joy,” he said. “Thank you for being friends and colleagues. This is a big thanks to everyone who ever supported me … out there in the district.”

Legislator George Borrello, R-Irving, who will soon assume the office of the county executive, was also honored. His commendation was read by Legislator PJ Wendel, R-Lakewood.

Borrello said it has been a privileged to serve as a Chautauqua County legislator. He said working with the other legislators, both past and present, has been a “truly gratifying experience.”

“I truly understand and appreciate everything that we do here,” he said. “And we have good government in Chautauqua County that starts with each and every person in this room and all the folks that work within county government. I want to thank you all for a great experience, and I look forward to working with you.”

County Executive Vince Horrigan was also honored with a commendation from the legislature, which was read by Borrello.

Horrigan said the government in Chautauqua County is “the way to govern.” He said in the Chautauqua County government, everyone handles themselves with professionalism and respect, no matter if they agree or not.

“It’s not always a yes, and many times it’s a no, but it is always a respectful dialogue and I’m proud of that,” he said. “I will take that with me that during the last four years, we really got it right here.”

Horrigan said he will be going into retirement, but will not be leaving the area.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity I had as county executive,” he said. “I’m not going anywhere because I love our beautiful Chautauqua Lake, and I am just excited about the future and wish everybody all the best and a Merry Christmas.”

In other news, the legislature unanimously approved the establishment of the Chautauqua Lake Protection and Rehabilitation Agency. The agency will investigate and create a recommendation regarding a possible lake district in the future. The agency will not establish the lake district, and will be a completely different entity.

During the public comment session, Paul Johnson, representing the Chautauqua Lake Partnership, requested that an amendment be made to the lake agency resolution which would add a year-round resident, Chautauqua Lake shore line property owner as an additional member of the agency, which could be appointed by the new county executive.

Johnson said if the amendment was made, the Chautauqua Lake Partnership would be in support of the agency.

However, no amendments to the resolution were made during the meeting.
