A Jamestown fire battalion chief responding to an emergency collided with a sport utility vehicle Friday evening.

The crash took place at the intersection of Newland Avenue and Hazzard Street before 7 p.m. According to Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department, the battalion chief, who could not be identified, was traveling eastbound on Newland Avenue when their vehicle collided with a blue SUV.

Samuelson said the fire department vehicle — known as Car 1 — had its lights and sirens on at the time of the crash. It wasn’t clear what fire crews were responding to prior to the collision.

The driver of the SUV and battalion chief were both taken by ambulance to UPMC Chautauqua WCA hospital. The severity of their injuries wasn’t known late Friday, though they weren’t considered life-threatening.

An accident reconstruction team with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office was summoned to the intersection to investigate the crash. Officers were seen taking multiple photographs and marking the pavement with chalk.
