Families Displaced After ‘Intentionally Set’ Fire Spreads To Apartments

An abandoned structure was destroyed and a neighboring apartment complex heavily damaged in a structure fire Wednesday morning on Barrett Avenue in Jamestown.

A morning fire that displaced several families at a Barrett Avenue apartment building Wednesday was intentionally set, according to the Jamestown Fire Department.

The fire, which was reported around 2:15 a.m., originated at an abandoned property at 213 Barrett Ave. before spreading to a neighboring apartment at 209 Barrett Ave.

Matthew Coon, first platoon battalion chief for the Jamestown Fire Department, said fire crews arrived to find the vacant property fully engulfed in flames. Assisted by the Jamestown Police Department, they helped evacuate up to 12 residents in the 209 Barrett Ave. structure.

No injuries were reported.

Both structures were deemed a total loss, sustaining extensive heat, smoke and water damage.

A van and a sedan, both of which were owned by tenants in the apartment building, were also destroyed in the blaze.

Coon said the Department of Development is currently demolishing the structures.

The American Red Cross was called to assist those displaced.
