An emergency demolition was ordered and Jamestown fire investigators were summoned following a blaze that ripped through a vacant residence early Monday in the city.

Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 5 a.m. to 274 Prospect St., between Cole Avenue and Barker Street. Crews found the attic fully engulfed by flames, at which time off-duty firefighters were called.

Sam Salemme, Jamestown Fire battalion chief, said residents at neighboring properties were quickly evacuated once the blaze began to engulf the Prospect Street structure. No injuries were reported.

“When I arrived on scene the entire attic was in flames so we made sure to get everyone out on both sides,” Salemme told The Post-Journal.

The structure’s roof collapsed about a half-hour after crews arrived. Salemme said the emergency demolition was then ordered as a result.

“The roof collapses and the fire gets into the voids, so we can’t get water on it,” he said. “So we let everything cool down a little bit.”

The battalion chief said it was too early to determine a cause of the blaze.

Monday’s fire is the second in less than a week at a vacant city residence that required emergency demolition. On May 24, crews were called to 213 Barrett Ave. after a fire spread to a nearby apartment complex, displacing 12 residents.

Fire officials found the vacant Barrett Avenue property engulfed by flames upon arrival and was later determined to be intentionally set.
