Investigation Into Arson Attacks, Falconer Fire Ongoing

Investigators looking into the recent outbreak of fires in the city have yet to report any breakthroughs.

Captain Robert F. Samuelson, division commander of the Jamestown Police Department, said investigators have been receiving tips from the public and are still following up on leads.

Samuelson said they have “no reason to believe” that drugs were involved in the arson attacks.

The string of fires occurred between Thursday and early Saturday morning, striking properties at 621 E. Sixth St.; 650 E. Sixth St.; 220 Crossman St.; 22 W. 11th St.; and 33 W. 10th St.

All residences appeared to be vacant homes, which according to police, are prime targets for arsonists.

No injuries were reported.

The fires come in the wake of a massive blaze that struck a commercial and residential building in Falconer, located at 29-31, 33-43 W. Main St., on Wednesday.

Falconer Mayor James Rensel told The Post-Journal on Monday that investigators are still unable to determine a cause of the fire.

He added that negotiations involving the owners of the building and the contractors responsible for the demolition are ongoing.

“They’re trying to reach an agreement .. over the logistics of the abatement of the demolition,” Rensel said.

Until the removal of the collapse zone can be negotiated, he said, a section of road between Davis and Work streets will remain closed.

The American Red Cross assisted 19 people affected by the fire.

Though much of the fire damage occurred in the upper residential area of the building, the businesses at the ground level sustained heavy damage from the water trickling down.

Businesses affected included Genesis Enterprises/Cassco Property Management, Better Life Nutrition, Village Salon, Roots Salon and The Body Shoppe.

No injuries were reported.

Anyone with information on any of these incidents is asked to call 9-1-1 or leave an anonymous tip with the Jamestown Police Department at 483-TIPS (8477).
