Thanks to unusually warm weather this month, golf courses across the area are looking to open up early — historically early.

Eric Trusso, manager of South Hills Country Club, located at 3108 Busti-Stillwater Road in Jamestown, said he can’t recall his golf course opening this early in its more than 30-year history.

“It’s really rare for us to be open now,” he said. “Usually, we open by April 1, but since we opened Monday, the reception has been good.”

Indeed, of the more than 25 golfers who made their way to South Hills on Wednesday, Jamestown resident and avid golfer, Chad Waddington, was especially excited.

“I love it,” he said. “I’ve been coming to South Hills for four years and this is the first time I played here in February. It’s still a little wet, but the course is in excellent shape for this time of year.”

Of course, not every fairway around the county is open for golf, with many courses, including the Rose Brook Golf Course in Irving, citing “too wet” conditions.

Myra Pinker, one of the owners of Rose Brook, said a turf professional will be assessing the course today and a date for open doors will be determined afterward.

Other courses said similar determinations will be made, especially since weather conditions are expected to turn sour by the end of the week.

“We do have a lot of wet and muddy spots, but we have a lot of die hard golfers around here and they’re ready to go,” Trusso said.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, temperatures are expected to remain in the 50s and 60s until Saturday. However, a 40 percent chance of showers is expected throughout the day today, with a 60 percent chance of rainfall by nightfall.

Rain is forecasted for Friday and Saturday, with a 60 percent chance of rainfall Friday and 80 percent chance Saturday.

A drop in temperatures and snow showers are expected for Sunday.
