No Cause Determined In Chestnut Street Structure Fire
No injuries were reported Tuesday night after a fire ripped through a Chestnut Street home.
Around 8:45 p.m., city firefighters responded to 37 Chestnut St. after a neighbor reportedly spotted the blaze and called 9-1-1.
Upon arrival, fire crews observed a tremendous amount of smoke coming from the rear of the home. Even a half-hour after the first call, thick, black smoke was still billowing from an upper floor.
Chainsaws were used to ventilate the roof and fire visibly broke out near the rear of the residence.
Off-duty firefighters were called to the scene as well as two investigators with the Jamestown Fire Department.
Around 9:45 p.m., the fire appeared to be under control.
Officials said the homeowners were not inside during the incident.
No cause of the fire is known and an investigation is underway.
“The damage inside is pretty extensive with the smoke and heat damage,” said Sam Salemme, Jamestown fire battalion chief. “We got the bulk of the fire knocked down in about 45 minutes.”
Salemme noted the fire was difficult to fight due to the makeup of the structure and the lack of a nearby hydrant, which caused some delays in establishing a water source.
