Graduation Report Finds Girls Have Advantage Over Boys

The girls are taking the lead in Upstate New York when it comes to graduation rates, according to Buffalo Business First.

The publication’s recent report on graduation rates shows that girls are graduating at a higher rate than boys in the upstate area. Buffalo Business First analyzed the 2016 graduation rates for the 349 Upstate New York school districts in which at least 20 girls and 20 boys entered high school in 2012. The rates were the percentages of students who earned diplomas by June 2016.

In those districts, 81 percent had a higher graduation rate for the girls, and 61 districts showed boys had higher graduation rates. BBF reports there were also five ties.

Locally, the trend holds true, with a higher rate of girls graduating than boys in nine districts: Cassadaga Valley, Chautauqua Lake, Dunkirk, Fredonia, Jamestown, Pine Valley, Silver Creek, Southwestern and Westfield school districts. Panama Central School District showed a tie between boys and girls. Bemus Point, Falconer Central, Forestville and Frewsburg central school districts showed boys had the upper hand when it comes to graduation rates.

In both categories, Panama graduated 100 percent of both boys and girls.

In Jamestown, the girls had a graduation rate of 81.1 percent, while the boys had a graduation rate of 67.6. Southwestern Central School District had a girls’ graduation rate of 94.4 percent, compared to a rate of 93.5 percent for the boys. Westfield Academy and Central School District had a girls’ graduation rate of 91.3 percent compared to a boys’ graduation rate of 75 percent.

Other highlights include a girls’ graduation rate of 90.7 percent, and a boys’ graduation rate of 88.5 percent in Fredonia; and a girls’ graduation rate of 87.1 percent and a boys graduation rate of 65.2 for the boys in Pine Valley.
