Furnace Likely Cause Of Bemus Point Structure Fire
BEMUS POINT — Quick work by firefighters saved a lakefront residence in Bemus Point from extensive fire damage on Monday.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 135 Lakeside Dr. shortly before 9 p.m., and upon arrival flames were seen coming from the roof of the property. According to Randy Edwards, first assistant chief for the Bemus Point Fire Department, smoke and flames were discovered by the property’s homeowners, who called 9-1-1.
Due to the location of the fire within the residence, Edwards said the cause could be from a furnace. Chautauqua County fire investigators were summoned to the scene to assist.
Firefighters from Ashville, Fluvanna and Ellery Center also provided additional manpower Monday night.
Edwards said crews were able to douse the fire quickly, preventing further damage.
“When we arrived on scene there were flames shooting out,” Edwards said. “But the guys did a very good job in stopping it.”
The fire chief said temperatures didn’t hamper efforts. “It really didn’t hurt anything,” he said of the frigid cold. “It’s actually warmer than it was yesterday.”
