Thanks to the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 18 new trees have been planted along Kingsbury Street in Jamestown.

On Wednesday, Dan Stone, city arborist, said six different types of trees were planted along Kingsbury Street. He said, as part of Jamestown Renaissance Corporation’s Renaissance Block Challenge, 42 new trees were planted in the three blocks awarded grant funding for exterior home improvements. Along with Kingsbury, Delaware Avenue and Barker Street neighborhoods also participated in this year’s Renaissance Block Challenge.

Homeowners who participate in the program received a matching grant up to $2,000 for the exterior renovations. This was the sixth year of the program to bring neighbors together while making exterior improvements to their homes. Since 2011, 30 clusters have participated in the program, with more than 350 property owners investing more than $800,000 in exterior improvements and repairs.

Stone said the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation donated $5,000 for the new trees. He said in the last 10 years, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation has donated $68,500 toward 646 trees that have been planted in the city. He added the new trees planted along Kingsbury Street have a lifespan of 25-30 years.

Pre-applications for the 2017 Renaissance Block Challenge are due Friday. From the pre-applications, Jamestown Renaissance Officials will invite neighborhoods in January to submit a final application. The final applications will be due March 8, with the awardees announced March 30.
