A Jamestown church was destroyed in an early morning fire Monday.

City firefighters were dispatched shortly before 2 a.m. for a structure fire at 291 Falconer St., the location of the First Church of God.

Upon arrival firefighters found smoke coming from the rear of the brick structure. Shortly thereafter fire visibly broke out and soon engulfed the entire church.

A call for off-duty firefighters was put out for more manpower.

Utility crews also responded in an attempt to disconnect power to the building.

Within an hour the structure’s roof had collapsed.

Jamestown police shut down traffic around Falconer Street.

A cause for the fire wasn’t immediately known.
