Development Center Has Helped Create 15 Jobs

MAYVILLE — The vision of the Small Business Development Center at Jamestown Community College is to create economic sustainability — one business at a time.

Last week, Courtney Curatolo discussed with the Chautauqua County Legislature Planning and Economic Development Committee how she is the new director of the Small Business Development Center. She said even though she is new to the county having moved from Naples, Fla., that she spent every summer with her family at Chautauqua Institution.

Curatolo said the agency provides information to small businesses on how to develop a business plan, marketing strategies, start-up guidance, veteran business planning assistance and several other services. She also discussed the center’s online Small Business Academy, which is the only Small Business Development Center to have one in the state of New York. She said more than 1,000 people have taken online classes the last two years. Classes include focuses on social media, agritourism, tax laws and several other topics. Since Jan 1, Curatolo said the Small Business Development Center at JCC has helped 55 business to create 15 new jobs and that has had an economic impact of more than $900,000.

During the meeting, the committee also approved a resolution between the county and the Small Business Development Center to provide technical assistance by tracking and assisting businesses in the early stage of development.

The agreement is for $34,653, which will be voted on by the full legislature during their voting session meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on the third floor of the Gerace Office Building in Mayville.
