A Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputy injured in a head-on crash last week has been released from the hospital.

Sheriff Joe Gerace told The Post-Journal Monday that the deputy, 29-year-old Jason Hallmark of Mayville, is recovering at home from a neck fracture following the crash.

Hallmark was driving a marked Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle Friday on Straight Road in Sheridan around 9 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle — operated by 36-year-old Theona Szumigala of Fredonia — traveling northbound on Center Road.

Both vehicles went off the road after the collision at the intersection, a police report from the Sheriff’s Office said.

Szumigala was transported by ambulance to Brooks Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She was treated and later released.

Hallmark was flown by Starflight helicopter to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for non-life threatening injuries. He was released from the hospital Sunday, Gerace said.

The Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team was called to the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Deputies were assisted by Sheridan firefighters, ALSTAR EMS, Chautauqua County EMS and fire police.
