MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Jim Quattrone, both Lakewood residents, will face off in a Sept. 13 Conservative Party primary for the party’s nomination in the Nov. 6 general election for sheriff.

According to Norm Green, county Democratic chairman, the county Conservative Party filed an authorization with the Board of Elections for the primary. Gerace and Quattrone both filed enough signatures to allow for the Conservative primary.

Quattrone, who has received the backing of the county Republican Committee, has 30 years of experience with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, serving 15 years in a supervisory position. He began his career in 1987 on the Navigation Patrol and, for a brief period, worked at the County Jail prior to attending the Sheriff’s Academy. In 1988, he was appointed to road patrol with the Sheriff’s Office and later assigned to the STOP DWI patrol.

The Democratic Committee-backed Gerace is seeking his seventh consecutive term as sheriff. He was first elected in 1994 and holds a master’s degree in administration from Alfred University, a bachelor’s degree in Police Science from Mercyhurst College and an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Jamestown Community College. In his 39-year career, Gerace noted the Sheriff’s Office has received five accreditations for divisions within the Sheriff’s Office and is one of only six sheriff’s offices in New York state to receive all five, including: law enforcement accreditation, jail accreditation, 911 Center accreditation, civil office accreditation and court security accreditation.
