The unemployment rate continues to decline in Chautauqua County.
The state Labor Department this week released preliminary area unemployment rates for July. Those seeking work in the county went from 5 percent in June to 4.8 percent in July. The unemployment rate was at 5.7 percent this time last year, the state Labor Department reported.
From July 2017 to July 2018, the state’s private sector job count increased by 155,700. In July of this year, the number of private sector jobs in the state was 8,192,300. The state’s private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers, which is conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In addition, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.5 percent to 4.3 percent last month.
On the national level, the unemployment rate went from 4 percent in the United States in June to 3.9 percent in July.
Rates are calculated using methods by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts about 3,100 households in New York each month.
