Prendergast Library Giving Back Art Work To Family

The James Prendergast Board of Trustees is giving back a painting to a Jamestown family that once presented it as a donation.

Last week, the library board approved deaccessioning a painting that had been donated to the library, said Joni Blackman, library board president. Deaccessioning means to officially remove an item from the listed holdings of a library, museum or an art gallery.

Blackman said the family at one time — she didn’t say when — donated the painting to the library. She said library officials were recently notified by the family, which Blackman would not name, that they would like the painting back.

“The family loves the painting and they wanted it back,” she said.

Blackman said the painting was not one of the artworks consigning to Sotheby’s last June to be auctioned off for sale.

In other library business, the board approved a new member, Dan Hickman. In March, Lynn Warner, library board vice president, said it is the library board’s goal to have 13 members by the end of the year. The board can have a maximum of 15 members. With the addition of Rob Hewitt, who the board approved as a new member during their March meeting, and Hickman, the library board has eight members.
