DUNKIRK — The former Peebles site won’t stay vacant for long as a new discount store looks to open sometime in mid- to late-April.

Label Shopper, a division of Peter Harris Clothes, officially signed a lease Monday to occupy the site where Peebles previously operated on Vineyard Drive in the town of Dunkirk next to TJ Maxx. Peebles closed Jan. 20.

Judy Piurowski, director of stores with Peter Harris Clothes and Label Shopper, said they’re hoping to fill a void with JCPenny and Peebles gone.

“It’s a nice-sized store,” Piurowski said. “We are very excited. We’re famous for ‘famous labels for less.'”

The business was founded in the town of Latham in 1970 by Peter Elitzer. Label Shopper has a little more than 80 stores in 12 states in the Northeast and as far west as Michigan and Illinois. Label Shopper buys and sells clothing and accessories up to 70 percent off original retail prices.

“We’ve been around for quite a while,” Piurowski said. “We’re not a fly by night.”

Interviews initiated Tuesday and continue today as the store looks to hire 10-12 employees.

Dunkirk Town Supervisor Richard Purol credited Ryan Mourer, town code enforcement officer, for his assistance in bringing the store to the vacant site. Purol said it’s a building that was left in good shape.

“It’s readily available to move right in. They didn’t have to do any construction inside at all,” Purol said. “We’re very happy. The sooner they open up, the better.”
