Temple Elementary students were given a chance to win a bike at the beginning of the school year if they had completed a summer reading challenge. A student who completed the challenge and picked at random to win the bike, decided to donate the bike back to the school.

The summer reading challenge was a competition designed to encourage young students to read over the summer. Students were treated to a celebration during the opening weeks of the school year and those who had participated were recognized and won special prizes.

Camden Becker, a first grader at Temple Elementary, completed the summer reading challenge, among many others, and was added to a list to win one of two donated bicycles. Becker’s name was drawn and he became the recipient of one of the bikes.

But after winning the prize Becker felt that he didn’t necessarily need the new bicycle because he already had one of his own at home. Becker decided to inform his parents and his teachers that he wanted to give the bike back.

Reading Teacher Holly Brainard and others were very impressed with Becker’s generous action and went back to the list of eligible students.

“What a huge act of kindness,” Brainard said of Becker’s decision to give the bike back. “I was just really impressed.”

After another drawing, third grader Noah Larsen was chosen to receive the bike. Larsen had also completed the summer reading challenge and was in the running to win the bike.

Brainard said that Larsen winning the bike was “very well deserved.”

She said that Larsen had helped his two younger sisters, a first grader and a kindergartener, finish the summer reading challenge.
