Sheriff’s Office Warns Of Scams In Wake Of Vegas Tragedy

Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace issued a warning Tuesday regarding potential scams in the wake of Sunday’s deadly shootings in Las Vegas.

Gerace warned computer users to be watchful for “various malicious cyber activity targeting both victims and potential donors.”

The sheriff said those wishing to help through donation should exercise caution when handling emails that relate to the shootings in Las Vegas that left at least 59 people dead and more than 500 injured.

Event-related phishing emails may attempt to trick users into sharing sensitive information, Gerace said. Scam emails could also contain links or attachments directing users to malware-infected websites.

Users should be wary of social media posts asking for money, calls, texts or donation websites, as well as door-to-door solicitations related to the tragedy.
