Vietnam Veterans Of America Fundraiser Saturday
The Jamestown Vietnam Veterans of America will be hosting a fundraiser Saturday to raise money for care packages to send to troops overseas and to help veterans receive medical care.
Chrissy Servis, Vietnam Veterans of America Support The Troops Committee chairwoman, said starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jamestown Vietnam Veterans of America Clubroom, located at 41 Bigelow Ave., a steak and clam bake fundraiser will be held.
“We have a steak and clam bake fundraiser every year. There will be pool and cornhole tournaments,” Servis said. “It is one of the fundraisers we host to raise money to send packages to troops overseas. We also help veterans here at home who might be sick and need help getting back-and-forth to the hospital. We help them with things that aren’t covered by insurance.”
Servis said each year the Vietnam Veterans of America host three fundraisers, with one usually taking place in March, another during the summer months and a third around Veterans Day in November.
“The fact we have been here for awhile, we started in 2005. For 12 years now we’ve been doing this all year long,” she said. “We are always looking for local soldiers to send packages to.”
Servis said anyone who wants to provide a soldier’s address for a care package can call her at 450-2442 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org
“We don’t want anyone to be forgotten,” she said. “My Dad, who is a Vietnam Vet, always said that he didn’t want today’s soldiers/veterans to feel like he and so many others did back then — so we try to do this by sending the care packages and taking care of our veterans on the homefront. We have adopted the motto of ‘Welcome Home’ to anyone who enters our doors.”
