Stockton Man Seriously Hurt Following Crash In Mayville

MAYVILLE — A Stockton man was seriously hurt in a crash Thursday afternoon.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, James Gelencser, 51, of Nelson Hill Road, was traveling on East Chautauqua Street in the village of Mayville around 2 p.m., when his vehicle went into the oppose lane of travel, went off the road and continued for 75 yards through the New York State Department of Transportation’s front lawn before hitting a tree head-on.

Deputies did not know why the vehicle went off the road. Gelencser suffered serious chest injuries after the engine and steering wheel were pushed into the driver’s compartment.

Gelencser was transferred to Hamot Hospital in serious condition.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
