Driver Distracted By Tick Crashes In Sheridan

A pickup truck that lost control on Route 5 slowed traffic along the state road this morning.

SHERIDAN — Minor injuries were reported in a one-vehicle accident about a mile east of the St. Columban’s Home on Route 5 on Friday.

The accident occurred around 8:50 a.m. after Gregory Rodriguez, 25, of Buffalo, who was heading west, apparently lost control of the vehicle when he was distracted by a tick on his arm.

When he attempted to remove it, his vehicle went off the road and struck a utility pole. Passenger Leo Rodriguez, 28, also of Buffalo, was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk.

A third passenger, Shane Morgis of Dunkirk, was not hurt.

Pieces of the vehicle were found in the yards of the two homes it happened in front of and the rear axle was missing once the vehicle came to rest.

Sheridan and Silver Creek fire crews assisted at the scene as well as the Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies.

The crash slowed traffic in both directions on Route 5 while the accident was being cleared, but it never closed the state road.
