Area Veterans To Be Honored During Memorial Day Celebration

The United Veterans Council will be conducting an honoring ceremony this Memorial Day at Jamestown’s Lakeview Cemetery immediately following the annual parade.

Twelve veterans buried as far back as 1861 will be honored during the event.

“Each year we try to bring something new to the picture to try and make people realize what Memorial Day is all about,” said Melodie Paladino, secretary for the United Veterans Council of Jamestown. “We thought it would be really neat to let people know how far back our veterans go that are buried in the cemetery.”

The first veteran buried was a soldier named Amasa Root, who died on June 6 in 1861. There is a total of 3,515 veteran graves at Lakeview Cemetery.

Those involved with the ceremony will each be given tags with the names of the respective veteran they are honoring. Those same 12 veterans will have their gravestones marked with red bows.

The Veterans Council is also showcasing a list of names of the first 100 veterans buried at the cemetery, to be presented in the cemetery median.

Three Medal of Honor recipients in the cemetery will be marked with blue bows.

Capt. John Plumb of the U.S. Navy will be acting as the guest speaker.

Aidan Moore will read the Gettysburg Address, Annika Spitzer will read the war poem “In Flanders Fields,” and Madison Arthur will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

“Our goal is to eventually present all 3,515 names, so people can look through and search their own heritage and see if somebody is buried there,” Paladino said. “People don’t realize exactly how in-depth the veterans and the history behind each of them actually goes.”

The Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m. and will travel on Fourth Street then proceed along Prendergast Avenue into Solder’s Circle in Lakeview Cemetery. Memorial services will begin once the parade ends.
