Athenex Seeks To Break Ground In June

DUNKIRK — An unexpected meeting resulted in learning about a tentative June 2017 date for the groundbreaking of the Athenex building.

When Dunkirk City Mayor Willie Rosas was at lunch on Wednesday, he happened to recognize a group of people from the Athenex team. They recognized Rosas, too, approached him, and a conversation began.

“We ran into each other while out at lunch. I recognized them and they recognized me, came up to me and introduced themselves and we started talking about the project,” Rosas said. “They said they’re going to come out and meet with me for lunch.”

Rosas said that he found out Rich Nassar, Athenex’s vice president of operations, and a couple of others were in the area to walk the site, and planned on being here in the area monthly until the project is completed.

“… They said that they are going the be looking to break ground before the end of June. That’s what (Nassar) told me,” Rosas said. “I don’t really have much more of an update.”

He then told the Athenex representatives to come and have lunch with him sometime, to which they said they’d take him up on the offer.

“Hopefully this is the beginning of a good, solid relationship,” Rosas said.

Athenex is looking to create a state-of-the-art, 300,000-square-foot pharmacy oncology manufacturing facility to be built off Route 5 in the east town of Dunkirk, which could result in up to 900 jobs.
