Cub Scouts Pull Out All Stops For Annual Race

Hand-crafted cars glimmered in the beaming sunlight as they zoomed down the track. A lightning-quick start to a not-so-typical Saturday.

The cub scouts of pack 115 watched with glee as their cars made their way to the finish line, hoping theirs would be the fastest of the bunch during the annual Jamestown Cub Scouts Citywide Pinewood Derby.

At the top of the track, cars were lined up and released in a quick fashion to make sure everyone got a turn. After each heat, the cars were caught at the end of the line after the time had been recorded and delivered back to the beginning of the track to match up once again.

For the first time, Shults Ford -Lincoln hosted the fast-paced event in their newly re-designed showroom.

Cubmaster Thom Brunner said he was happy the dealership hosted the event and appreciated the $500 donation they made for the race.

“It was an awesome time,” Brunner said. “We hope to do it again next year. (They are) all ready to do it again next year.”

He said there were 34 boys who entered in the race.

The Cub Scout pack presented Richard Shelley of Ed Shults with a plaque, thanking the business for their hospitality and support. Shelley said the Shults would be very happy with the plaque and would have loved the event.

“Come back any time,” Shelley said. “It’s a beautiful facility and we’d love to have you.”

The races started early in the morning and lasted until the afternoon, with each boy having decorated his own car with paint, stickers and other items.

Jordan Spencer, race participant, said he decorated his car with emoji stickers and painted it blue and green. The boys all gathered together to create the cars, Spencer said.

The Pinewood Derby has been an annual event for the cub scouts since 1953.

Shannon Mescall, pack treasurer, said the pack hosts the event each year.

“It works out nice,” Mescall said.

Participants in the race were presented ribbons, and special awards were given out for different categories. Trophies were handed out to the top three winners for the event.

Third-place was awarded to Trent Olson; second-place went to Dominic Pangborn; and first-place went to Chase Lombardo.

The Ed Shults Ford-Lincoln Showroom is located at 2258 Washington St. in Jamestown.
