Chestnut Street Residence Sustains Extensive Damage In Fire

No one was home when a fire broke out Tuesday night in the city.

Firefighters were summoned around 8:45 p.m. for multiple reports of a structure fire at 37 Chestnut St. A neighbor first spotted the blaze and called 9-1-1.

All firefighters were called to assist battling the fire. Around 9 p.m., a call went out for all interior firefighters to evacuate the Chestnut Street structure. All crews were then accounted for.

A half-hour after the first call was received, intense thick, black smoke was still bellowing from an upper floor. Chainsaws were used to ventilate the roof.

Fire visibly broke out near the rear of the residence.

Two investigators with the Jamestown Fire Department were called to the fire scene for assistance.

No one was reportedly injured in the blaze. The homeowner told The Post-Journal he wasn’t sure what could have sparked the fire.

Around 9:45 p.m., the fire appeared to be under control. Fire officials said the structure sustained extensive smoke and heat damage.

No cause of the fire was immediately known. An investigation is underway, fire officials said.
