Local Businesses Targeted In Scam Attempts

The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is warning residents of a scam that reportedly targeted multiple businesses today.

The BPU said three separate area businesses were contacted by a person identifying themselves as a BPU field representative. The caller claimed a work order to disconnect service would be completed unless the customer went to a local pharmacy to pay the caller with a money card.

Rebecca Robbins, BPU communication coordinator, said payments are only accepted at the BPU customer service center at 91 Steele St. and clerk offices in Jamestown and Ellicott.

Customers also can pay online or by phone, though Robbins said customers much initiate the payments.

“Please be aware that any such described calls are a scam,” Robbins said.
