Zlotchew Honored By County Foreign Language Teachers

Clark Zlotchew

Clark Zlotchew was recently celebrated for his 54 1/2 years as a foreign language professor by the Chautauqua County Foreign Language Teachers Association.

At a recent meeting of the association, Zlotchew was recognized for his dedication to teaching and his skill in the field.

Zlotchew was given an award which named him the “Educator of Educators,” as he taught many students who went on to become teachers themselves. Zlotchew said it was a great honor to received the award.

“Receiving an award  from the Chautauqua County Foreign Language Teachers is a great satisfaction to me,” he said. “It means that my colleagues in language teaching have shown they appreciate the 54 1/2 years of my teaching career and particularly the 41 1/2 years I’ve taught in Chautauqua County. The inscription on the plaque reading ‘educator or educators’ is especially dear to my heart. The title is literally true since Albert Van Dette and several other excellent foreign-language teachers in this county have been my students and have made me proud of them.”

VanDette, Silver Creek Central School Spanish teacher, is also the Chautauqua County Foreign Language Teachers Association secretary.

Zlotchew taught for 42 years at the State University of Fredonia, and lives in Chautauqua County with his wife, Marilyn.

“I was 42 years old when I started to teach in Fredonia,” he said. “Since I’m now 84 years old, that represents half of my life. My wife, nine years younger than I, has lived most of her life here.”

Zlotchew said his plans for retirement are to play guitar, spend more time with his grandchildren, travel, spend more time learning Japanese and Russian and write works of fiction.
