Winter Clothes To Be Made Available To Falconer’s Needy
FALCONER — Starting this week, winter weather accessories will be made available to Falconer’s needy at no cost.
Jeanne Vanstrom and the Clarks Corners Community Church in Kennedy are spearheading an effort to assist those in need in fending off the falling temperatures by offering free, homemade winter items such as hats, gloves and scarves to the community.
With approval from the Falconer Village Board, Vanstrom and other volunteers will place a clothesline outside the Santa House on Colson Drive — right next to Tops Friendly Markets — which will bear the aforementioned clothing items that community members can take as needed. Vanstrom said she was inspired by a similar initiative that took in place in Jamestown two seasons ago, when local residents Audrey Ralston and Giuffreda Culpepper collaborated with several downtown businesses to offer their clothing items on clotheslines situated outside Second Street storefronts and Riverside Park.
“When I took this idea to the village board they thought it was a good idea and authorized me to put up one clothesline,” Vanstrom said. “We’re going to do this strictly on need. If all the items are taken right away, we’ll have to stop; but would I would like is for people who like to knit and sew to contribute and add to it so we can keep it going. We’d love it if we could get some community participation, because we’re not sure how it’s going to go over.”
Vanstrom said the initiative will start with smaller clothing items, such as hats and mittens. For more information, contact Vanstrom at 665-2691 or Clarks Corners Community Church at 267-3122.
