County Unemployment Rates Rise In November

Chautauqua County’s jobless rate is up yet again according to preliminary figures released this week by the New York State Department of Labor.

November unemployment figures show the county at 5.7 percent, which is up from 5.6 percent in October and 5.5 percent in September. The rate mirrors what was seen last November.

The county opened the year with an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent. From February to June, the figure decreased from 6.1 percent to 5.1 percent respectively before going up to 5.3 percent in July.

After slightly decreasing to 5.1 percent in August, the unemployment rate went up to 5.5 percent in September. From there, the rate has gradually increased ever since.

Data shows manufacturing jobs are holding steady this year, around 9,100, as well as leisure and hospitality employment, 5,500. Goods producing jobs have seen an increase throughout the year as well as employment in trade, transportation and utilities.

From November 2015 to November 2016, the Labor Department says the state’s private sector job count increased by 100,900. This month, private sector jobs in the state stood at 7,950,000. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.2 percent to 5.1 percent in November.

Regionally, Chautauqua County’s unemployment rate is higher than Cattaraugus County, 5.5 percent, Allegany County, 5 percent, Livingston County, 4.5 percent, and Erie County, 4.7 percent.

In the city of Jamestown, Labor Department data shows a 6.6 percent unemployment rate for November, which is down from 7.2 percent in October. The city started out with a 6.5 percent unemployment rate in January. From February to June, it dropped from 6.3 percent to 5.5 percent respectively before rising to 5.8 percent in July and 6.7 percent in September.
