CHERRY CREEK — The Christmas season was welcomed in grand style last weekend in the north county village of Cherry Creek. The sound of children’s laughter filled the air, as they played outside, biding time while parents shopped around town at various Christmas sales and visited with each other.

The Cherry Creek/Leon United Methodist Church was a beehive of activity as 26 local artisans, crafters and vendors displayed their wares. Everything from jewelry, quilted items, ornaments and snowmen crafted from log rounds graced the thirty-five tables spread throughout the church. For Many of the crafters, the Cherry Creek Christmas has become a family affair, as was the case with the Schrane family. Mom Melissa, and her children, Katrina and Luke, had a wonderful display of various crafts, among which were the log round snowmen. The children’s grandma even came for the day.

In the church’s kitchen, many dozens of beautifully decorated, delicious cookies awaited shoppers desiring a head start to their holiday baking. And, for those who were hungry, soups and chili was beckoning. “I think we could safely say that everyone is doing well today,” said Brenda Hendricks, co-chair of the weekend’s events. “Crafters and vendors are selling, customers are finding great gifts, and between the soups, chili and cookies, tummies are happy.”

Across the street at the Trillium Lodge, families enjoyed the buffet luncheon, and the children waited for their opportunity to share their secret Christmas wishes and have their photos taken with Santa. Olivia and Sophie Stewart, of Forest hills, aged ten and eight, respectively, were enjoying lunch with their parents, when Santa came over to their table and surprised them. All the while giant grins covered their faces.

At Rustic Creations, home of all things country- and woodland-themed, proprietor Nancy Hall welcomed shoppers coming in to take advantage of Christmas Open House prices. Also a co- chair of the weekend events, she was pleased with event’s success. “We welcomed lots of visitors today, enjoying the kickoff to the holiday season. I’m looking forward to the Memorial Tree ceremony Sunday afternoon. It’s always a highlight of the weekend.”

And a highlight it was. Nearly 50 participants filled the gazebo and filled the area surrounding the two trees in the Memorial Park on Main Street, behind the town Hall. Those participating had ordered bows to be hung on the trees: red, white and blue bows for those being honored for military service; pink bows to honor those lost to cancer; and burgundy bows to honor those deceased due to other causes. After the bows were hung on the trees, candles were lit as participants circled the trees, Pastor Bruce Fish, Chaplain of the Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire District led a prayer of comfort and remembrance. The well-known Carol, “Silent Night” was sung, and everyone adjourned to the Trillium Lodge for refreshments and Christmas caroling.
