JCC, New Flyer Named As Part of Start-Up NY Program

A plan put in motion in August by Jamestown Community College has now come to fruition, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The governor announced Friday that the association between the college and New Flyer of America under the Start-Up NY program was approved. Also, 38 other companies also joined the Start-Up NY program in areas across the state, Cuomo said.

Start-Up NY is an initiative started by the governor to provide incentives to businesses to start, relocate or significantly expand in the state through affiliations with and sponsorships by educational institutions within the SUNY system, such as JCC.

“This program continues to attract companies with visionary goals to every region of our state and is playing a key role in revitalizing those communities,” Cuomo said.

According to a release from the governor’s office, New Flyer of America plans to create 31 new jobs and will invest $1,598,000. The company is the leading manufacturer of heavy-duty buses in the U.S. and Canada and is a new company to New York state. New Flyer is known for breaking new ground with the first low-floor bus, the first diesel-electric bus and, most-recently, the world’s first zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell fleet.

The company will be occupying the former Quality Markets location on Fluvanna Avenue. Earlier this month, the Jamestown Local Development Corporation approved a direct economic development loan for $500,000 to Shults Real Estate. Since Shults Real Estate purchased the former Quality Markets building in January, they have been working to transform the site.

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher was thrilled with the new Start-Up NY opportunities.

“In just its first two years, Start-Up NY has produced significant benefits for the state’s economy, while simultaneously bringing new private partners to SUNY and generating academic benefits for our faculty and students,” Zimpher said. “SUNY is proud to play a central role in Start-Up NY, generating approximately 90 percent of program benefits to date. Congratulations to each of the SUNY colleges and universities welcoming new business partners to campus as part of this important economic development program.”
