LAKEWOOD — With the recent unanimous approval from the village of Lakewood’s trustees, 13 of 16 possible entities around Chautauqua Lake have signed onto the countywide Memorandum of Agreement for the Chautauqua Lake Weed Management Consensus Strategy.

As of Tuesday evening, three groups — the village of Bemus Point, town of Ellery and Chautauqua Lake Partnership — have yet to vote on the matter. Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello, who has helped lead the charge in organizing collaboration among lakefront municipalities and lake nonprofits, has been making his rounds in attempts to show the merits of the document.

Lakewood’s Deputy Mayor Ted McCague called the lake agreement a “huge step forward” following the affirmative vote from the village board during Tuesday morning’s special meeting.

Borrello reiterated that lake-related groups working together should encourage potential donors to give freely, without the concern of having to take a side. Ecology and Environment, the firm that has largely helped created the lake memo, will also be writing a white paper on the validity of herbicides in Chautauqua Lake following spring applications.

GPS equipment will also keep tabs on weed harvesting machines in order to obtain what Borrello called a “complete picture” of the needs of the lake. Borrello also highlighted that third-party testing of water quality in regard to herbicide treatments was something he said everyone agreed on during the creation of the consensus strategy.
