UPDATE: 1 Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting

FREDONIA — One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Fredonia.

Fredonia Chief Bradley Meyers said police responded to 176 Liberty St. shortly before 2 p.m. to assist with village firefighters for a male with an unknown medical condition in a locked bathroom. Meyers said the person “attacked one of the officers” with a weapon later identified as a knife.

The officer, a Fredonia police officer, shot and killed the person, Bradley told reporters. The officer, who was not named, has been placed on leave pending the investigation.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police are handling the investigation.

County coroner Richard Mackowiak was at the scene. The U.S. Attorney’s Office also has been notified as the shooting involved a police officer.

Liberty Street was closed from Porter Avenue to Water Street, with police and emergency crews being the only ones able to reach the scene.
