(9:30 AM) Crash With Deer Leads To Drug Charges For Area Woman

SHERMAN — A Salamanca woman was remanded to Chautauqua County Jail after she was found with multiple drugs following a crash Thursday.

Charged was 51-year-old Candy L. Leon after Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies were called at 11:55 p.m. to Interstate 86 in Sherman for a reported motor vehicle crash. Deputies learned Leon had struck a deer, causing heavy damage to the vehicle.

No one was injured in the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

While talking to Leon, deputies reportedly observed “suspicious circumstances with the occupants and investigated further.”

A K-9 Unit was summoned, and during a search, deputies found a half ounce of methamphetamine, 2 grams of cocaine, 2 grams of heroin, prescription pills, marijuana, hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia.

Leon was charged with with fourth-degree felony criminal possession of a controlled substance, three counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminally using a hypodermic instrument and unlawful possession of marijuana. She was arraigned in Sherman Town Court before being remanded to jail on $10,000 bail.
