(3:50 PM) State Police Warn Of Phone Scam

The New York State Police is warning the public of a reported phone scam.

The scam, police said Wednesday in a press release, reaches as far east as Erie County and as far west as Steuben County. The scam involves someone claiming be from the state police and requesting personal information.

“The number the individuals are calling from shows on caller ID as that of a state police station, although the calls are not originating from the station,” the New York State Police said in a statement. “We can confirm this is a scam, and add the state police would never ask for this information over the phone. We are investigating the matter.”

“As with any suspicious phone call, the state police recommend that you never share any personal information over the phone unless you are 100 percent sure of the origin of the call, and that verifying conditions exist such as security questions and passwords that only you and the vendor would know.”
