RED HOUSE — Two Ithaca residents were taken to the hospital after the truck they were in rolled over on Interstate 86 in the Cattaraugus Town of Red House on Friday.

According to the New York State Police, Natan Huffman and his wife Nancy, were traveling eastbound in a 2013 Ford Explorer on the Southern Tier Expressway towing a 2018 Coleman Camping trailer 1.6 miles from Exit 18. Witnesses told police the camper made contact with an eastbound tractor trailer, driven by Malcom Metzler.

The Explorer lost control following the contact, crossed into the median of the interstate and rolled over with the camper.

Both Huffmans complained of chest pain due to wearing seatbelts in the crash, while Natan Huffman also suffered an abrasion to his head. They were both transported to Olean General Hospital.

I-86 was closed to traffic for several hours.

State police were assisted Friday by firefighters from the Allegheny Indian Reservation, East Randolph and Cold Spring as well as Seneca Marshals, Salamanca police and Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.

State police said there were conflicting reports regarding how the contact happened between the two vehicles.

“However, an uninvolved witness corroborated the story of the tractor trailer driver that the camping trailer swerved from its lane,” Capt. Eric Balon of the New York State Police said.

No charges were filed.
