KENNEDY — Severe flooding closed several south county roads Friday afternoon due to heavy rain in the region.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo extended its flood warning in central Cattaraugus and southeastern Chautauqua counties until 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The weather service estimates between 2-5 inches of rain has fallen; flooding continues to be reported in Cherry Creek, Poland, Kennedy, Ellington and Randolph.

Interstate 86 was closed in both directions from the Kennedy to Falconer exits for about an hour due to flooding and a car crash. According to county fire dispatch, a water rescue occurred near Route 62 and Poland Center Road.

Capt. Eric Balon of the New York State Police said troopers will “remain in the area until the road (I-86) is fully open again.”

Meanwhile, parts of Route 394 toward Kennedy were closed to traffic due to water covering the road; several stranded cars were reported in the area.

Route 62 was also closed in Kennedy. Firefighters from Falconer were summoned to direct traffic away from high-water areas.
