POMFRET — One person was seriously injured in a crash at Route 5 and Van Buren Road in the town of Pomfret, New York State Police said.

Police said the driver of a Lincoln sedan, identified as 91-year-old Donald R. Thering of Fredonia, failed to yield the right of way after stopping at a stop sign at Van Buren Road. Theringr reportedly entered the intersection and was struck by a pickup truck driven by Matthew Coyle of Fredonia, who was westbound on Route 5.

The truck struck the passenger-side of the sedan, state police told reporters.

The crash occurred around 1:15 p.m.

Thering was taken by helicopter to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

Police said the sedan sustained significant damage. Rescue crews from Brocton, Portland and Fredonia fire departments were on the scene.
