Regional Youth Symphony Fall Concert Is Nov. 18

Bryan Eckenrode

The Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony opens its 2018-19 season on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. with its Fall Chamber Concert.

The Chamber Orchestra, the most advanced of CRYS’s three orchestras, will perform in the Judith Social Hall of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 35 W. Fairmount Ave., Lakewood. A reception follows the free performance. An offering will be taken.

Classical compositions in the diverse program include J.S. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Prelude to the 1941 film 49th Parallel, and “The Great Gate of Kiev” from the suite Pictures at an Exhibition by Moussorgsky.

On a more contemporary note will be themes from films including Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Pirates of the Caribbean and the “Symphonic Suite” from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. “Let it Snow!” will get the audience in the holiday spirit.

Bryan Eckenrode, Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony music director and conductor, will conduct the concert. Selected area professional musicians will perform with the students, providing instrumentation not yet filled by students and and serving as role models for the young musicians. Eckenrode directs all three CRYS orchestras, Prelude Strings and Young Artists Orchestra as well as the Chamber Orchestra.

Applications are being accepted for rehearsals beginning in January for beginning string players (NYSSMA level I) in Prelude Strings, intermediate students (levels II and III) in YAO, and advanced students (levels IV, V and VI) in Chamber Orchestra. Prelude will rehearse Friday afternoons and YAO and Chamber on Saturdays, all at Gloria Dei.

In addition to the opportunity work under Eckenrode, students will also receive regular coaching by teaching professionals Cody Hiller and Marie Karbacka and periodic coaching by faculty of the School of Music of the State University at Fredonia.

Plans are also in progress for Chautauqua Region Youth Symphony students to attend local professional performances and to combine campus tours with concerts at SUNY Fredonia and Mercyhurst University.
