Westfield Church To Host Blood Drive

WESTFIELD — An American Red Cross blood drive in honor of Sharon Ackendorf will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.

Donors will be treated to a light lunch. There will be a Chinese auction with drawing at 4:15 p.m. All proceeds and donations will help pay for Ackendorf’s medical costs.

Ackendorf has myelodysplastic syndrome with deletion 5q chromosome. This means her bone marrow does not make enough mature blood cells and will most likely require her to have blood transfusions. This disease leaves Ackendorf with persistent anemia, resulting in fatigue, easy bleeding and bruising, with difficulty functioning on a daily basis. Due to this rare condition, the medication she must take has a very high price tag. Ackendorf has served the Westfield community for nearly 30 years cooking, including at the soup kitchen and helping those in need.

The drive will be located in the church’s main hall, 12 Elm St., Westfield. For more information, call 326-2064.
