Poland Town Board Holds September Meeting

POLAND — The Poland Town Board meeting saw members discussing ongoing projects as well as future concerns.

During the first privilege of the floor, a resident offered to be responsible for the removal of old flags in the cemeteries this fall. Board members thanked her for her offer, and authorized her to do so. She will bring the flags to the Town Clerk’s Office when they have been removed.

Supervisor Kelly Snow stated that she has been working on the clean energy grant application for the town, but has not been able to connect with the local representative about some of the paperwork. She hoped to hear back soon and get all the forms completed.

Larry Mee reported that there has still been no definite word on repairs to the railroad crossing in Route 62 in Kennedy. He stated that railroad officials are still trying to get everything approved by the state in order to replace the crossing. Mee told the board that they hoped to be able to work on it this fall, but nothing had been approved. Some temporary patching was put in to try to make the crossing smoother for all the vehicles that use it, but it is only a stop-gap measure.

Town Clerk Bonnita Wallace informed board members that she had contacted the state department of transportation after the last board meeting to see about getting a speed study done on Route 62 as it comes into the four corners in Kennedy. A resident had expressed concern that the speed limit was too high and requested that it be lowered. Wallace told the board that State officials had come down soon after receiving the request and done the study. Looking at these results, the state decided not to lower the speed limit in that area. A letter has been sent to the resident including the state’s decision.

Assessor Heather Young-Deyell reported that school tax bills had been issued, and checks have been sent from Albany for property tax relief and STAR credit.

Zoning Officer George Gustafson noted that Code Officer Alan Gustafson was in the middle of three days of State training and was unable to attend the board meeting. He said that it had been fairly active with permits and complaints. They have completed nineteen inspections. The new owner of property on Second Street that had been destroyed by fire is in the process of getting permits for demolition. The planning board is looking at the zoning laws to look for ways to update for modern building issues.

Snow noted that it is the time of year for the budget. A date for the first budget workshop will be set at the October board meeting.

The next regular Poland Town Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.
