New Directions Begins Backpack Drive
RANDOLPH — New Directions Youth and Family Services has begun its annual Fill-a-Backpack campaign.
New Directions has partnered with Walmart in Olean to host a donation drive on Wednesday, Aug. 22. Volunteers will staff a table located at the Walmart entrance from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., asking customers to donate school supplies.
Annually serving nearly 2,000 youth and families from communities all over Western New York who may be experiencing economic hardships, Fill-a-Backpack helps families meet their children’s back-to-school needs. This year, nearly 150 children in New Directions’ community-based programs are in need of a backpack furnished with school supplies for start of school in September 2018. Children who will benefit are living at home, receiving support services from New Directions and attending local public schools in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Erie counties.
“School supply lists have become quite costly,” said James Coder, chief executive officer of New Directions. “We are kindly asking the community to come together, to send every child back-to-school, prepared for learning.”
